Why Buy Life insurance For A Stay At Home Mom?
Let me start off by saying that I am not really discriminating. I talk about stay at home moms, but this could also apply to stay at home dads. They are getting a lot more common these days, and I think that families should do whatever works for them!
Many one income families only think they need to purchase coverage for the parent who is employed outside the home. They know they would be in big trouble if they lost that income. It is easy to see why that breadwinner should be covered. If they lost the breadwinner’s income, it might be hard for them to keep their home, pay bills, and have a comfortable lifestyle.
But a stay at home parent contributes a lot to a family, and if those services had to be replaced, the family would suffer. Consider some of the things a stay at home parent probably does every day.
- Child Care Services – Have you priced day care these days? Good day care centers or nannies are not cheap. If you lost the services of a stay at home parent, could you really count on another family member or friend to care for the kids for free?
- Help With Homework - It often falls on the stay at home parent to help a child with homework like studying, tutoring, projects, and making sure supplies are stocked. Tutors are not cheap.
- Cooking - Would you have to replace all of those delicious home cooked meals with prepared food or dining out?
- Transportation – Who will take Junior to soccer practice or Jenny to the orthodontist if the stay at home parent cannot work?
- Cleaning – Most stay at parents probably perform some cleaning duties every day. Routine chores like washing dishes, cleaning off the counter, and making sure the bathroom are tidy have to be kept up. Larger cleaning jobs like washing the floor or windows may be done less often, but are still time consuming.
You can probably think of a lot more duties that stay at home moms do. If these services needed to be replaced,, it could cost hundreds of dollars every week. So a stay at home parent may not make income, but they save the family a lot of money.
Also consider that many stay at home moms only do it while kids are young. They plan on going back to work when the kids are older so they can help save for retirement or college Educations.
How Much Life insurance Does a Say At Home Parent Need?
It is impossible to give one right answer that would be correct for every family. The number would depend upon many unique factors for an individual family. It would also depend upon the ability of the other parent, or another person, to step in and take over some of the duties. But it would be a good idea to sit down and figure out how much it would cost to replace some of the services that the parent performs while the kids are young, and then estimate a possible amount of money the spouse might contribute later if he or she goes back to work!
